About Us

JA Shaw and Company which was established in 1898 is one of the longest established legal practices in the midlands of Ireland.  It is remarkable to think they have served clients in the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries.  The firm prides itself on serving its clients to the very highest professional standards and are proud that they have served generations of families and have continued relationships with long standing local businesses.

An astute understanding of the law together with clear, practical advice and dedicated staff have made the firm what it is today.  The practise has an established track record in every area of law and currently represents private clients, families, small and medium sized businesses, large local and multinational companies and financial institutions.   Located in Mullingar, the firm has a wide customer base and serves its Dublin based customers on a very personal level.

Shaws solicitors

Following over 100 years in its well known location on Bishopgate Street in Mullingar, the firm made the practical decision to move to custom built offices in Marlinstown Business Park just 1km from Mullingar town centre.  The new offices provide clients with free parking, excellent accessibility, and the opportunity for confidential meetings in very comfortable surroundings.

History of the Firm – Some interesting anecdotes for your perusal…..

Our premises

We go right back to 1898 to mark the foundation of the firm when Edward Shaw commenced practice as a Solicitor on what was then called Earl Street, now known as Pearse Street in the centre of Mullingar.

In those days the practice of law was not quite what it is today and Edward preferred spending time perfecting his skills as a fisherman and game shooter.  Thankfully, his brother Joseph qualified as a solicitor in 1906 and joined his brother Edward in the family business.  They practiced under the title Shaw Bros Solicitors and moved the firm to Bishopgate Street, Mullingar.

Edward Shaw suffered from bad health and the practice was carried out principally by Joseph A. Shaw and subsequently adopted the style and title J.A.Shaw and Co.  Joseph was a much more astute lawyer and businessman and laid the foundations of what the firm is today.  In the early 1920’s his keen business brain afforded him a very comfortable lifestyle, however the crash of 1929 and the subsequent Great Depression took a heavy toll on both his personal finances and his wealth and he died quite suddenly in 1931.

Shortly before his death, his nephew Dermot P. Shaw (father and grandfather of current partners Thomas and John Shaw) joined the practice and he continued to operate the business under the name J.A. Shaw and Co.  In 1947 Dermot was joined in the business by his first cousin, Patrick J.Shaw (father of current partner, Denis Shaw).  Patrick, commonly known as Paddy was a son of P.W. Shaw,  who operated a successful hardware business in the centre of Mullingar.  P.W. Shaw was a T.D in the first Dail in Ireland and a member of Cumann na nGael.  Paddy Shaw had practised initially as a sole practitioner on Church Avenue but when he joined in partnership with Dermot, they both practiced from Bishopgate Street.   Through hard work and dedication throughout the 1940’s and the tough 1950’s, Paddy and Dermot built up a very substantial and highly regarded legal practice.

In 1955, Dermot was elected as the President of the Law Society of Ireland, his sincere interest in the development of the legal profession in Ireland brought distinction to the firm of J.A. Shaw and Co.

In 1959, Dermot’s only son Thomas qualified as a solicitor and joined the firm, which was now operating an office in Mullingar and Dublin.   In 1970, Denis Shaw, son of Paddy Shaw, qualified as a solicitor and joined the firm to continue to grow and advance the practice further.

1988 saw the election of Thomas D. Shaw as President of the Law Society of Ireland, continuing the tradition of his father.

Tradition has continued in more ways the one in the firm, when in 1989, John D Shaw, son on Thomas D. Shaw qualified as a solicitor and became the third generation of one family to serve in the business.  John also followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather and was elected at the young age of 42 as President of the Law Society of Ireland.

This was a unique distinction for the Shaw family to have three successive generations serve in office as President of the Law Society of Ireland and a special honour for the firm itself.

The 1990’s saw substantial growth within the firm when the practise expanded and now includes 8 partners and a team of 15 support staff.   Joining the extended Shaw family in business are Kathy Garvey, Seamus Tunney, Mary Tunney and Barbara Judge and in recent times by Tricia Shaw, grand-daughter of Paddy Shaw.

And so this takes us to the present day when the Shaw family and their legal partners continue the tradition of providing astute legal advice and a dedicated service to the people of Mullingar and beyond
